When I open PJS, the initial thing I see is a grey box that says "Verifying Application requirements" which has the globe on the right and a computer on the left and a network pipe running from the PC to the globe. Once that has run its course, the PJS splash screen pops up and says it is connecting to the database. Once that is complete, I get the PJS Desktop Summary template and I am ready to go.
It feels like it takes a long time to get to the ready to go point. Could the load order be changed so that the PJS template appears 1st, and then the connection to the database happens in the background while I am looking at the Desktop Summary ? I guess all the data in the Desktop Summary comes from the database, but could the image of what's in there be stored local to the PJS application ?
For reference, I am using PJS on an HP 1.5Ghz Centrino laptop with 512 Mb RAM running WinXP SP2, so this may not even be an issue for users with faster boxes.

Hmm, that is not something that I've seen. We test the software on a variety of boxes, some fast, and some slow. One of my favorite test machines is a 733mhz machine that was upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP long ago. It has had so many applications of different types installed and uninstalled, that it is a nice messy environment to check.
Le me see what we can do. I'm thinking that changing this order might be something for a future version, provided it is just an annoyance rather than a problem for you.

Our beta release of PerfectJob was build using a Microsoft installer technology called "ClickOnce". As a result of this installer, everytime the application starts, it checks to see if a new version exists before launching the actual application. That is what is happening when you see the "grey box".
Our next version, the 1.0 production release, is built using a custom installer, and update process, that eliminates the "grey box", and makes the check for updates occur in the background at the same time the database connection is being established. The result is a quicker startup, and more user control over the install parameters.
Thanks for your feedback.

Please download the release version, 1.0 I think you'll like the startup much better. If you have more suggestions, please post them!
